Road roller License

Rollers are used to compact asphalt gravel and soil.

During the roller course, There are 2 primary types of rollers

steel wheel roller

pneumatic roller

both these rollers play an important role in the maintenance of our roads as always refer to your operators manual for instruction on the machine for instructions on the machine you will be using and have a roller licence.

The pneumatic roller consists of a set of front and back rubber tyres used to compact shallow lift fill, aggregate and asphalt material

standard equipment found on roller include a pressurised spray system for maximum spray control, certified roller over protection structure, a seat belt, back up alarm, horn, vandal cover, coco mats, gauges and meters.

A roller is commonly ballasted with water, sand or steel. Ballast increased the weight of the machine allowing for greater compaction and added density to the surface.

The spray system moisten the roller tyres keeping hot asphalt material from sticking and in addition to the sprayers coco mats distribute a film of water to the entire surface of the pneumatic tyres as they turn. This both cools the tyres and prevents tuck material from stick to the rollers wheel.

A swivel seat allows you to operate from the left side, center or the right side of the machine. Hydro static drive allows for infinitely variable travel speed.

Other features include parking brake and hydraulic powering steering.

Rollers are a key piece heavy equipments used in highway maintenance thats why is important to understand the capabilities and proper operation techniques of the machine.

As a heavier equipment operator your top priority is operating the machine in a safe and effective manner. Remember to obey all the safety details that are on the machine. Before operating a roller be sure you are a ware of all risk factors that are in your job parameter.

Inspect the work area for obstruction and debris.

Operator must ride in the operator seat keeping the hands on the controls at all times. Always wear your seat belt while operating the equipment. This allows for ROP(RollOver Protection system) to protect you incase of a rollover incident. Remember the ROPS is useless if you not wearing a seatbelt.

The roller is a single occupant machine that at no time should passengers be allowed to to ride on the equipment.

When entering and exiting the roller, always use 3 point of contact this consist of 2 feet and 1 hand or 1 foo and 2 hands point at all times.

Don’t operate the roller if the machine weight including the balance do not exceeds the approved weight limits of the machine, this will cause damage to the roller and increase the possibility of an accident.

Please refer to the operators manual for the correct vehicle for operation. Before performing a maintenance on the roller bring it to full stop on level ground. Never provide service or maintenance to the machine unless the wheels are properly chocked and parking brakes is properly applied. Remember it is prohibited to make any modification to the machine that may affect safety without the manufacturer approval, this applies to any installation or adjustments of safety devices.

Your safety and the safety of others are dependant on the correct operation of the roller. An out of control machine can result to injury or death
