The first step in preventing accidents is preparation: Lets begin by taking a close look at unique set of signals that are used in a rigging process

Communication is essential in a riggers work in order to move a load successfully both a rigger and a crane operator need to use number of hand signals

  1. To indicate to the operator that you want the hook lowered, point downward and move hand in small circle
  2. When the load is ready to be hoisted raise your arm and point up and move the hand in a small circle
  3. By extending one arm out to the side with the palm facing downward and moving the arm back and forth horizontally, you can show that you want the crane to stop
  4. To call for an emergency stop, extend both hands out to the side with palms down move both arms horizontally

There are 2 other special signals that are used only with boom crane

  1. To show that you want that you want the boom to be lowered, extend your arm and close the fist and point the thumb down.
  2. To show that you want that you want the boom to be raised, extend your arm and close the fist and point the thumb up

Rigging plays a pivotal role in crane operation. If a load is not rigged properly the consequences can be devastating but by taking the proper precautions you can get the job done safely.

Before rigging a load make sure rigger and crane know the standard hand signals, know the weight capacity of crane and the lifting accessories you are using and you must have a rigging certificate .
